Brief History

1960 first surgery done on a 12year old boy with an abdominal infection. Records show Dr K Sundaraja oversaw the patient under anaesthesia.

1961 first Caesarian section under open drop ether method.

1963 trained staff nurses returned from India and they oversaw patients under anaesthesia after this.

By 1975 under foreign aid / WHO co-operation, teams of doctors arrived on regular basis and conducted surgeries and they had their own anaesthetists.; this was once or twice a year.

In 1981 the first local General surgeon and Gynaecologist returned after training and many surgeries were done under spinal after this.

1982, first local qualified anaesthetist Dr Ibrahim Manik returned to work after training and operation theater generally became operational after this.

National society formed in 2014.
